Is Function Health worth it?

The short answer

Function Health can be worth it if you want a lot of lab data for a low price. $365 a year buys 160+ lab tests over two Quest visits, with clinician notes, an app and AI chat. It suits self-directed people who have a doctor to act on their results. Live coaching, gamification and a results guarantee are not listed on their site. Check the renewal price and refund terms before you buy.

What you get for $365 a year

Every fact on this page about Function Health comes from functionhealth.com, checked on 3 and 4 November 2026. Prices and features change, so check their site before you buy.

Function sells an individual membership at $365 a year, charged annually, which it describes as $1 a day. Its pricing page says the membership is HSA/FSA eligible, and its FAQ tells members to check with their plan and provides an itemised receipt for reimbursement.

Function says the membership includes 160+ lab tests a year: 100+ tests at an annual visit, then 60+ tests 3 to 6 months later to see what has changed. The Mid-Year Test must be used before your annual renewal and does not roll over. You can also buy extra tests on demand.

What costs extra

Some services are on offer but sit outside the $365. Budget for them if you expect to use them.

What is not listed on their site

Live 1-on-1 sessions with a nutritionist, personal trainer or health coach are not listed on their site. Nutrition, fitness, sleep and stress are covered by Protocols, which Function describes as personalised, evidence-based plans created with the context of your health data and goals.

Member questions go through a member chat. Function's FAQ says it does not offer medical advice there, though it provides explanations for each biomarker and possible reasons for out-of-range results. Booked calls or video visits with a clinician are not listed on their site.

Streaks, leaderboards, challenges and prizes for members are not listed on their site. Nor is a results guarantee.

Function is also clear about its own role. Its site footer says it is a healthcare technology company and not a laboratory or medical provider, that its services are not a substitute for medical care, and that you should discuss questions about results with a primary care physician or other licensed provider.

Cancelling and refunds

Membership renews automatically at Function's then-current price until you cancel, according to its terms of service (last updated 7 October 2026). Cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the billing cycle, and you keep access until then. Function does not allow pauses, but you can cancel and rejoin.

The refund wording differs between pages. The terms give a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of your first purchase and before any sample is collected, and say renewals are nonrefundable. The FAQ says Function does not offer refunds for prior payments. If a refund matters to you, ask Function which applies before you pay.

Who Function Health suits

Function is a strong fit if you want a broad set of lab results at a low cost per test, are happy to visit a Quest location for a standard blood draw, and like to read your own data and act on written plans and AI explanations. It also suits people who already have a primary care doctor to review out-of-range results, since Function points members to their own provider for questions.

It is a weaker fit if you want ongoing live support from a coach or clinician, or a guarantee tied to results. It is not available to people under 18 or during pregnancy, and testing is not offered in Rhode Island, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

The trade-off with testing 160+ markers

More tests means more information, and also more results to interpret. MedlinePlus explains that reference ranges are based on results from large groups of healthy people, and that it is common for healthy people to sometimes have results outside the range. Tests can also give false positives, where a result suggests a condition you do not have.

So the more markers you test, the more likely it is that at least one will be flagged. That is not a reason to avoid broad testing, but it is a reason to have a plan for follow-up. MedlinePlus advises talking with your provider about your results, even if they are normal.

Common questions

How much does Function Health cost?

Function Health charges $365 a year for an individual membership, billed annually. Add-on tests, at-home blood draws and MRI or CT scans cost extra, and people testing in New York or New Jersey pay lab fees of up to $248 a year. The site footer calls $365 the first-year membership and the terms say renewal is at the then-current price, so ask what renewal will cost. Checked 4 November 2026.

Does Function Health include a doctor?

Function says clinicians review every result, write a summary with action items and add notes on out-of-range results, and a healthcare provider phones you if a result is critical. Its member chat does not give medical advice, and booked clinician calls or video visits are not listed on their site. Function describes itself as a healthcare technology company, not a medical provider, and points members to their own doctor.

Can you get a refund from Function Health?

It depends on which page you read. Function's terms of service give a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of your first purchase and before any sample is collected, and say renewals are nonrefundable. Its FAQ says it does not offer refunds for prior payments. You can cancel at any time, effective at the end of the billing cycle, but you cannot pause. Ask Function to confirm before you pay.

Can you use HSA or FSA funds for Function Health?

Function says its membership is HSA/FSA eligible and gives members an itemised receipt, available once a lab visit is scheduled, to submit for reimbursement. It also tells members to check with their plan, and its site footer says it does not give tax advice and that eligibility differs between plans. Confirm with your plan administrator before you rely on it.
